B&S Property, located in Mayfair, bought the site in Colindale when the previous owners went bankrupt, according to Peter Virdee, managing director.

Before getting into real estate, the Sikh entrepreneur worked for his family's retail business and built residential care facilities. He maintains a wide range of foreign interests with the help of his father, and he has been nominated for a Lloyds TSB Asian Jewel commerce award. Despite the economic downturn and property recession, Mr. Virdee declared today that the Oriental City idea will move forward, adding, "It would be ludicrous to say that recent events have had no impact." It is being proposed to take a phased approach. Traders will be the first to return because the market will be the first component of the site to be developed.

According to Peter Virdee, the residential component will be a wait-and-see issue. It would be sensible to delay building until the housing market improves in the current circumstances.

The "Real Chinatown," as it was called, was a shrine for fans of Oriental food and was home to traders from the Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Thai, and Filipino communities.

The idea to restore the run-down food hall aroused controversy since it would force the vendors to evacuate the premises while the work was done. The Commission for Racial Equality and the Chinese government both supported the shops' case, but the redevelopment proposal was eventually approved in March when former mayor Ken Livingstone provided a £2 million compensation package to the displaced traders. The original owner, Development Securities, was given permission to build a larger market, two major merchants, 520 one- and two-bedroom flats, and a primary school.

Mr. Peter Virdee, on the other hand, told the Standard that the project is still on schedule and that demolition work will start shortly.

Virdee Foundation's Mr. Peter Virdee claimed, "We own the location, and there are no financial concerns." "Everything is in good working order." All we need now is the council's final permission (Barnet). The devastation might start in the next weeks."
